Water & Hazards Working Group at Virginia Tech

Welcome to my academic home. I am an Associate Professor in the Department of Geography and in the Virginia Water Resources Research Center at Virginia Tech. I am also affiliated with the Center for Emerging, Zoonotic, and Arthropod-Borne Pathogens.

My research examines human-environment interactions, specifically the human ecology of water and the intersection of hazards and anthropic systems. Primary research interests include access to water, household water treatment, the provision of sanitation services, and disaster reconstruction in the WASH sector. I recently co-edited the Handbook of Disaster Response & Recovery (Routledge Press, London) and am currently co-editing the companion volume Handbook of Disaster Mitigation & Preparedness.
My teaching explores human dimensions of contemporary environmental issues—often from a critical perspective—with content from our backyard in Virginia to far reaches of the globe.
