Teaching Philosophy

My teaching explores dynamics of socio-ecological relationships, with content primarily from the international arena but also from America and the local context of Virginia. For instruction, I tend towards the Socratic methoda student-centered approach that poses queries in order to elicit dialogue and critical thinking. I also adapt curriculum to foster inclusivity and an interdisciplinary learning environment. Thus, ethical issues portending to social and environmental justice often rise to the forefront.

I truly have fun in the classroom and enjoy setting aside time for guest speakers, field trips, and service learning. On the latter, recent service learning / community engagement projects include building a compost for the Virginia Department of Health, organizing Earth Week activities at Harding Avenue Elementary, designing media and web content for the Floyd County Humane Society, and supporting existing programs at Feeding America and College Mentors for Kids.
